We received these informational flyers to help students and their families determine when their child may be "too sick" to attend school. Does your student experience anxiety? Does it impact their school attendance? Here's a helpful resource. We hope you find these helpful.

Good Evening Ferndale Elementary School Parents, Today many of you received attendance letters that included the days that your child may have been ill and the attendance was excused. Last school year 22.2% of Ferndale Elementary students were chronically absent. The California Department of Education's definition of a student who is chronically absent includes excused, unexcused, and tardies greater than 30 minutes. We will be sending out truancy letters that include the absences listed above. Our mandate from the California Department of Education is to reduce the percentage of students who are chronically absent. At Ferndale Elementary School we are committed to improving attendance and that is why we review your child's attendance as well as their learning benchmarks. We understand that the number one way to improve attendance is through positive relationships with students and teachers. We understand that illness and unexpected events happen. If your child will be gone for 3 or more days, we can place them on short-term independent study and that will not count as them being absent. Your child must complete their independent study or it will be marked as an absence. For more information regarding Ferndale Elementary School's 2022-23 chronic absenteeism, here is the link. https://www.caschooldashboard.org/reports/12753746007843/2022/academic-engagement#chronic-absenteeism California Definition of Chronic Absentee A "chronic absentee" has been defined in EC Section 60901(c)(1)External link opens in new window or tab. as "a pupil who is absent on 10 percent or more of the schooldays in the school year when the total number of days a pupil is absent is divided by the total number of days the pupil is enrolled and school was actually taught in the regular day schools of the district, exclusive of Saturdays and Sundays." Thank you, Mrs. Carmesin

Hello 5th-8th grade girls basketball families - for girls basketball season, we are asking all parents and athletes to sign PAPER packet versions of the FES Athletic Handbook in addition to registering your child electronically. Since this is the first year we've done registration electronically through ArbiterSports, we are trying to ensure that every athlete and parent understands exactly what they are signing (*note: the content of the FES Athletic Handbook is very similar to the content from previous years). If you have any questions or concerns with registering electronically through ArbiterSports or on paper, please contact Diana Cuevas at 707-786-5300 ext 340. Thank you

The main parking lot at Ferndale Elementary school has been modified. We have a modular building in our parking lot and until further notice you can not pick up in the parking lot. We understand the inconvenience. We recommend parking on the Shaw avenue. We are working with our engineers to redesign our parking lot, but I do not have a date yet. Please plan on parking on the street to ensure student safety.

Good Morning Ferndale Elementary School families, we are excited to have your children join us for the 23-24 school year. Today is early release at 1:00 p.m. for the entire school. All pickup and drop off must happen through the front of the school on Shaw Ave. We understand and appreciate your patience and flexibility during school pick up times. We acknowledge that on early release days our school traffic is cumbersome. Looking forward to a wonderful school year. Thank you, FES staff

Ferndale Unified staff began the 2023-2024 school year with back to school professional development. Our educators engaged in data analysis facilitated by the Humboldt County Office of Education School Support team. We identified barriers to our students accessing their education and what we as educators can put into place to reduce barriers. Thank you to all of our staff at Ferndale Unified who choose to make this a terrific school year.
