An Update on the Future of Ferndale Elementary’s Main Building

Submitted by Superintendent Danielle Carmesin

Each month, I will share updates from the Ferndale Unified School District with our community through the Ferndale Enterprise. My goal is simple: to provide clear information about the work happening in our schools, the decisions we are making, and the direction we are heading. Some updates will celebrate student learning and growth. Others, like this one, will address complex decisions that shape our district's future. Transparency matters, especially when the topics are difficult.

On February 11, 2026, the Ferndale Unified School District Board of Trustees directed me to move forward with a facility strategy that includes abatement and demolition of the Ferndale Elementary School Main Building, as well as pursuing new construction.

This decision followed a detailed presentation from our district architect and consultant, Dr. Fred Van Vleck, who reviewed the building’s history, current condition, modernization requirements, and funding considerations

The Main Building was constructed in 1924 and last significantly renovated in 1984.

For many in Ferndale, it is more than a structure—it represents childhood memories and community history.

At the same time, the information presented was clear. The building does not meet current ADA standards. Flooding in the basement has worsened in recent years. Modernization under current California Building Code requirements would trigger extensive structural upgrades, hazardous material abatement, and significant additional cost

After reviewing both modernization and replacement options, the architect’s professional recommendation was new construction

As Superintendent, I sit at the intersection of honoring our past and preparing responsibly for our future. I recognize what this building represents to our community. I also carry the responsibility of ensuring that students learn in facilities that are safe, accessible, and built to serve them well into the next generation. Those two truths guided this recommendation and the Board’s direction.

This decision begins a longer process. There will be opportunities to design a facility that respects the architectural character of our campus while meeting modern safety and instructional standards. We will continue to post presentations, timelines, and updates on the district website so community members can follow our facilities journey step by step.

My commitment is to continue communicating openly and consistently. Our responsibility is to Ferndale’s students—today and for decades to come.

Community members are invited to attend a virtual meeting on Friday, March 13, at 10:00 a.m. to ask questions and provide feedback directly to me. Additional virtual meetings are scheduled specifically for parents and staff to ensure all stakeholder groups have space for conversation. The Zoom link can be found on the district website, on the Facilities Department page, and also under the Events section. We encourage anyone who would like more information or who would like to share input to participate.
